Tityus smithi is a species of scorpion in the genus Tityus, a group known for containing several medically significant venomous species. It is native to parts of South America, where it inhabits tropical and subtropical environments, often favoring forested areas with high humidity.
This scorpion has a relatively slender body and is typically dark brown to reddish-brown, with lighter legs and a somewhat robust tail (metasoma). Adults generally reach around 3–4 inches (7–10 cm) in length, depending on locality and sex.
Tityus smithi is nocturnal and spends the daytime hidden under bark, rocks, leaf litter, or within natural crevices. At night it emerges to hunt small insects and other arthropods, using its agility and venom to subdue prey.
Like many members of the Tityus genus, its venom is considered medically significant. Stings can cause strong localized pain, swelling, and systemic effects such as nausea, sweating, and in more severe cases cardiovascular or neurological symptoms. While not every sting is life-threatening, caution is warranted, especially in children or sensitive individuals.
Overall, Tityus smithi is a typical representative of its genus—secretive, fast-moving, and equipped with a potent defensive venom adapted for both prey capture and deterrence.
