Psalmopoeus irminia, commonly known as the Venezuelan Suntiger, is one of the most striking arboreal tarantulas in the hobby. Native to the tropical forests of Venezuela, this beautiful New World species is instantly recognizable by its jet-black body, vibrant orange leg markings, and bold tiger-like patterning along the abdomen. Reaching an adult leg span of around 5–6 inches (13–15 cm), the Venezuelan Suntiger is a stunning display species that quickly becomes the centerpiece of any collection.
Known for its rapid growth, heavy webbing, and enthusiastic feeding response, P. irminia is an active species that spends much of its time constructing elaborate web tunnels and retreats among cork bark and branches. While often remaining hidden inside its webbed hide during the day, it frequently emerges after dark to explore its enclosure and hunt for prey.
Although it is a New World tarantula, Psalmopoeus irminia does not possess urticating hairs. Instead, it relies on exceptional speed and defensive behavior when threatened. Its quick movements and occasional defensive attitude make it best suited for intermediate to experienced keepers. Handling is not recommended.
The Venezuelan Suntiger thrives in a tall, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces and secure hiding places. Temperatures between 75–82°F (24–28°C) with moderate to high humidity and excellent cross-ventilation provide ideal conditions for this species while encouraging healthy growth and natural web-building behavior.
