Phidippus audax, commonly known as the bold jumping spider or bold jumper, is a large, diurnal spider native to North America, ranging from southeastern Canada through the continental United States to northern Mexico, with introduced populations in Hawaii and elsewhere. Belonging to the family Salticidae, this species is characterized by its bold black body adorned with distinctive white triangular spots on the abdomen, iridescent green chelicerae (jaws), and powerful legs capable of jumping distances up to 50 times its body length.

Adult females are significantly larger than males with body lengths ranging from 8 to 19 mm, while males measure 6 to 13 mm. These spiders possess exceptional stereoscopic vision, which they use to actively stalk prey rather than build webs for hunting. They are solitary carnivores that feed on various insects and arthropods, playing a beneficial role in agriculture by controlling pest populations.

In terms of care and behavior, Phidippus audax is considered beginner-friendly for pet keepers due to its calm and curious temperament. Their lifespan varies by sex: females live 1 to 3 years, whereas males typically live only about 1 year, often dying shortly after their final molt. They are generally tolerant of handling once acclimated and are not considered dangerous to humans, though they may bite in self-defense.
