Meet the Socotra Island Blue Baboon—a stunning Old World tarantula that commands attention with its brilliant blue and orange coloring. Native to Yemen's remote Socotra Island, this species brings serious visual appeal to any collection. While it's relatively calm for an Old World spider, don't be fooled—it's lightning-fast and will bolt when spooked.
The Socotra Island Blue Baboon breaks the tarantula rulebook in the best way possible. Unlike virtually every other tarantula species, M. balfouri actually tolerates living with others—sharing burrows, coexisting peacefully, and even feeding together. It's genuinely rare in the spider world and makes for an incredibly rewarding communal setup if you're willing to monitor carefully. Don't mistake its relatively calm demeanor for docility though. This Old World species is lightning-quick, naturally reclusive, and will absolutely defend itself when threatened. Without urticating hairs to fall back on, it relies on speed and potent venom instead. A bite would hurt and should definitely be avoided, but it's not medically dangerous. Perfect for keepers ready to experience something truly different in tarantula keeping.
