Homoeomma chilense is a beautiful and underrated New World tarantula native to the temperate regions of Chile. Often referred to simply as a “Chilean Flame” or “Chilean arboreal ground tarantula” in the hobby, this species is appreciated for its soft, subtle coloration and calm, display-friendly behavior compared to many faster or more defensive tarantulas.
Adults typically show a mix of earthy browns, warm copper tones, and gentle pinkish highlights on the legs and carapace, giving them a refined, almost pastel-like appearance under good lighting. While not as bold or high-contrast as some popular display species, H. chilense stands out for its elegance and natural beauty.
This species is generally considered semi-fossorial to terrestrial in captivity, often creating shallow burrows or webbed retreats under cork bark or surface cover. It is a steady webber and will often establish a secure hide where it spends much of its time, becoming more visible during evening hours or feeding time.
In terms of temperament, Homoeomma chilense is typically quite manageable and considered one of the more relaxed New World species. While individual behavior can vary, it is generally calm and not prone to defensive displays, making it a solid option for keepers who prefer a lower-stress, display-oriented tarantula. Handling is still not recommended, as with all tarantulas.
In captivity, it does best in a terrestrial setup with moderate substrate depth for burrowing, good ventilation, and hiding structures like cork bark. Temperatures around 70–78°F (21–26°C) with moderate humidity and a stable moisture gradient work well for this species.
With its gentle demeanor, subtle coloration, and easygoing care requirements, Homoeomma chilense is a great choice for keepers looking for a unique, understated tarantula that still offers engaging natural behavior and long-term display value.
