The Heteroscodra maculata, known as the Togo Starburst Baboon, is a standout among tarantulas with its distinctive spotted pattern and unique body shape. Popular in the tarantula-keeping community, this Old World species offers both eye-catching beauty and interesting behaviors. Each spider’s bold markings make it a striking addition to any collection, while its consistent traits ensure a fascinating pet for enthusiasts. Ongoing studies continue to reveal more about its natural history, adding to the allure of this captivating species.

Best suited for advanced keepers due to its speed, defensiveness, and potent venom, this species thrives in a tall, well-ventilated enclosure with vertical elements such as cork bark tubes or branches for climbing and webbing. A few inches of substrate should be provided to help maintain moderate humidity, though they rarely burrow, and a water dish should always be available. Temperatures between 75–85°F (24–29°C) and humidity around 65–75% are ideal, with occasional light moisture in one corner of the enclosure. H. maculata is a fast-growing tarantula that can live 12–15 years as a female (3–4 years for males) and is an enthusiastic feeder, readily taking crickets, roaches, and mealworms. While reclusive, it often builds impressive web tunnels and occasionally shows itself, making it a fascinating display species for experienced hobbyists who appreciate its beauty but respect its defensive nature.
