Grammostola rosea, commonly known as the Chilean rose hair tarantula, is a popular terrestrial species native to the arid regions of Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. It is well known for its calm demeanor and hardy nature, making it one of the most commonly kept tarantulas in the hobby.
This species typically displays a brown to gray base coloration with subtle pink or rose-colored hairs covering the carapace and abdomen, which become more noticeable under light. While generally docile, individuals can vary in temperament and may flick urticating hairs when disturbed.
In captivity, G. rosea thrives in a simple terrestrial enclosure with dry substrate and a hide. It prefers lower humidity levels and temperatures between 70–78°F (21–26°C), closely mimicking its natural, semi-arid habitat. Overly moist conditions should be avoided.
Feeding consists of insects such as crickets or roaches, though this species is known for its occasional long fasting periods, which are normal and not typically a cause for concern.
Due to its resilience, ease of care, and generally calm disposition, the Chilean rose hair tarantula is widely considered an excellent choice for beginner keepers.
