Cyriocosmus elegans, commonly known as the Trinidad Dwarf Tiger Tarantula, is a small and vividly patterned terrestrial species native to Trinidad and parts of northern South America. It is especially prized for its bold abdominal markings and compact size.
Adults typically reach a leg span of about 2–3 inches. The carapace is bronze to copper in tone, while the abdomen displays a striking black “tiger stripe” or leaf-like pattern over a lighter tan background. The legs are light brown with darker accents, giving this species a sharp, high-contrast appearance despite its small stature.
In captivity, C. elegans thrives in a terrestrial setup with a few inches of slightly moist substrate to allow for shallow burrowing. It appreciates moderate humidity, good ventilation, and a small hide. Temperatures in the mid-70s°F are ideal.
This species is generally shy and quick, often retreating to its burrow when disturbed. Like other New World tarantulas, it possesses urticating hairs and may kick them if threatened. Its small size, vivid pattern, and manageable care requirements make it a favorite among keepers who enjoy dwarf tarantulas.
