Ceteragyrus darlingi

Ceratogyrus darlingi is a striking Old World tarantula from the dry regions of southern Africa, particularly Zimbabwe and neighboring areas. It is best known for the distinctive horn-like projection on the top of its carapace, a feature shared by several species in the Ceratogyrus genus and one that makes these spiders especially popular among experienced keepers.

This species typically has a dark brown to charcoal-colored body with lighter tan or golden tones on the legs. Adults can reach a leg span of around 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm). While they may not be as brightly colored as some tropical tarantulas, their unique appearance and fascinating behavior more than make up for it.

Ceratogyrus darlingi is a heavy burrower in captivity and in the wild. It naturally digs deep tunnels in dry, compact soils, spending much of its time underground and emerging at night to hunt. Given the opportunity, it will create an extensive network of burrows and webbing.

Like many Old World species, this tarantula is extremely fast and highly defensive. It does not possess urticating hairs and instead relies on speed, threat displays, and a potent venom for defense. When disturbed, it may raise its front legs and strike if it feels cornered, making it a species best suited for advanced keepers.
