Centruroides sculpturatus is a slender, highly venomous scorpion native to the southwestern United States, especially Arizona, and parts of northern Mexico.
It has a thin body, long tail, and narrow pincers, typically colored pale yellow to light tan, which helps it blend into desert environments. Adults usually reach about 2.5–3 inches (6–8 cm) in length.
This species is nocturnal and highly active at night, when it hunts insects and other small invertebrates. It is also an excellent climber and is often found on trees, rocks, walls, and even inside homes, which makes encounters with humans relatively common in endemic areas.
Its venom is neurotoxic and medically significant. Stings can cause intense pain, tingling, muscle twitching, and in more severe cases—especially in children—breathing difficulties. While serious complications are uncommon with treatment, it remains one of the most medically important scorpions in North America.
