Aspinochilus rufus is a recently named arboreal tarantula from the montane rainforests of Mount Argopuro in East Java, Indonesia. It's the one and only species in its new genus, known for its smooth legs without spines and unique reproductive traits.
This is a striking tarantula known for its vivid red, mohawk-like leg flanges and warm russet-to-fawn body, creating a unique “red halo” look. Adults reach about 6–7 inches in leg span, with females living up to 15 years. Native to high-elevation rainforests, this endangered species faces habitat loss but thrives in captivity. Fast-growing and hardy, it’s popular for breeding but best suited to experienced keepers due to its speed, defensive behavior, potent venom, and skittishness.
